Jumanji 4: release date speculation, cast speculation, and latest news
The Jumanji franchise has been a huge success for Sony Pictures and a fourth film is in the works.
After the first two films each grossed close to a billion worldwide and became one of Sony Pictures' most valuable franchises after Spider-Man, a fourth Jumanji film seems like a no-brainer.
However, nearly two years on from the critical and box office success of 2019's Jumanji: The Next Level, Ruby Roundhouse star Karen Gillan told Collider that "nobody has spoken to me" and that she "doesn't know anything" about a sequel.
While the news may sound alarming - especially since The Next Level came out only two years after 2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - that does not mean Jumanji 4 is not happening at all.
Production has likely been slowed down by the pandemic and the busy schedules of the film's stars, as previously Seven Bucks Production president Hiram Garcia had confirmed conversations are “100 per cent happening”.
Plus the post-credits scene of Jumanji: The Next Level was clearly teasing an intriguing premise for a sequel that would provide a fresh twist on the formula of the last two films.
Hopefully we won't have to wait as long as Alan Parrish from the first movie to see how this one plays out - here’s everything we know about Jumanji 4 so far.
Jumanji 4 release date speculation
An exact release date is yet to be announced but there were two years between the December releases of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level in 2017 and 2019.
If Sony keeps on track in this way, Jumanji 4 could be in cinemas by December 2022.
This accounts for a delay due to the coronavirus pandemic, pushing it back a year from December 2021, after director Jake Kasdan said talks about the film had been paused in April of 2020.
However it seems Sony has no plans to work on another sequel just yet, as in July 2021 star Karen Gillan revealed that she hasn't heard any updates about Jumanji 4.
“I actually don’t know anything about the next [Jumanji]," Gillan told Collider. "Nobody has spoken to me, so I think - I don’t know. I assume they’ll make one and I don’t know how they’re gonna tackle that. But I hope they make another one because it’s so much fun.”
However, a December 2022 release date is still feasible - filming for Jumanji: The Next Level did not take place until January to May 2019, in time for a December 2019 release date.

Jumanji 4 cast speculation
As mentioned above, Johnson would be expected to return as Bravestone, and it is thought the film’s other core characters/sprites – Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), Franklin "Mouse" Finbar (Kevin Hart) and Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon (Jack Black) – will return.
Therefore, their real-world teen versions can be expected to make a comeback, with Madison Iseman as Bethany, Alex Wolff as Spencer, Morgan Turner as Martha and Ser’Darius Blain as Fridge.
It's also possible we could see the return of fellow Jumanji franchise veterans Nick Jonas (Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough), Awkwafina (Ming Fleetfoot) and Colin Hanks (Alex Vreeke).
And following her cameo in the third film, could original Jumanji star Bebe Neuwirth be back again as Nora Shepherd? Don't rule it out!

What would be the Jumanji 4 plot?
The end of Jumanji: The Next Level provided a set-up for the next movie as Spencer’s mother (Marin Hinkle) and a heating mechanic were sucked into the game as some of the game’s animals were released into the real world.
Rather than see the characters sucked into the video game jungle once again, this hints that instead the jungle would come to them - seeing the teenagers fight exotic animals in present-day America much like the original Jumanji. This leaves room for avatars to have escaped the game too although this has not been confirmed.
Director Kasdan and Dwayne Johnson have both suggested that The Next Level's villain Jurgen the Brutal would be revealed as an avatar in the next film, and that his real-world identity would be explored.
